India: Government prepares stringent law to fight witchcraft

The State Government is giving final shape to a legislation which will take on the bizarre practice of witchcraft, widely prevalent in the rural pockets and is growingly seen as a crime against women. The law proposes punishment not only for those who perpetrate severe atrocities on the “witches,” but also on those who prescribe it through various means. Read more here.

Nepal: Woman branded witch in Nuwakot‚ beaten up

NUWAKOT: Masini Tamang, 35, was brutally beaten up by villagers for allegedly practicing witchcraft at Lachyang VDC in Nuwakot. They tied her and beat up from Monday morning to the next evening.
Villagers had blamed her of casting magic spell on a local Suklal Tamang. Read more here.

India: Women killed for practising witchcraft

JAMSHEDPUR (JHARKHAND): A woman died in an attempt to appease the goddess while two women were killed allegedly for practicing witchcraft in separate incidents in adjoining West Singhbhum district, police today said. Read more here.

Namibia: Ritual killings rock Kavango Region

Incidents of muti killings are said to be on the increase in Kavango Region, where the Namibian police have arrested four people in connection with an incident in which 36-year-old Kantana Kasian Ndonga was killed, allegedly to harvest body parts for medicine. Read more here.

Papua New Guinea: Bougainvillians came out in force today to demand an end to Sorcery-related killings.

North Bougainvillians came out in force today to demand an end to Sorcery-related killings. At a forum organised by the North Bougainville Human Rights Committee (NBHRC) in Buka today at Bel Isi Park , several hundred Bougainvillians met to condemn the recent beheading of  Helen Rumbali, accused of sorcery, and to demand an end to the murder of innocent women. Jos — Ritual killers on Monday struck in Jos, killing and removing the eyes and tongue of a young lady in Twanchit Village at Tudun Wada in the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau. Read more here.

Kenya: Sisters lynched in Kisii Village

TWO sisters were over the weekend lynched by villagers at Nyang’iti in Kisii over claims they were practicing witchcraft. The elderly sisters who were identified as Esther Nyankumeria and Linet Nyankumeria aged 50 and 45 years respectively were killed in their house by the irate villagers on allegations they had a hand in the  death of their nephew. Africa: Witchcraft Accusations Prompt Large-Scale Response by African Theologians

Approximately 50 international pastors and scholars—the majority from seven African nations—convened in Nairobi, Kenya, last month to address the growing problem. According to the Carl F. Henry Center for Theological Understanding at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS), which sponsored the conference, “This historic gathering marks the first large-scale, international and interdenominational effort within the church and within the framework of Christian theology to address the growing presence of witch accusations and violence.” Read more here.
