Worldwide: Witchcraft accusations on the rise – with deadly results

In April, an elderly school teacher was beheaded in Papua New Guinea after her neighbors accused her of witchcraft. A few days earlier, seven people were kidnapped and tortured with hot irons over suspicions of sorcery in Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province. Read more here.

Papua New Guinea: Witchhunts an increasing problem

On a tropical island in Papua New Guinea, a mob armed with guns, machetes and axes stormed a house by night. They seized Helen Rumbali and three female relatives, set the building on fire and took the women away to be tortured. Their alleged crime was witchcraft. Ms Rumbali’s sister and two teenage nieces were released after negotiations with police. Ms Rumbali, a 40-something former teacher, was beheaded. Read more here.

Nigeria: Man in court for alleged human sacrifice

A ritualist, Ajadi Rafiu has been arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrate Court for allegedly using human being for sacrifice. The accused, who was suspected of using innocent citizens of the village for sacrifice, allegedly killed the deceased to appease his great grandfather and the founder of their village. Tanzania: Albinos targeted for human sacrifice in Tanzania; groups seek government protection

As an infant in rural Tanzania, Angel Salvatory was unusual. Snow white skin, blond hair, and blue eyes set her apart from others in her village. Those unique looks have also made her a target. “Her father thought she was a gift from God,” says Salvatory’s mother, Bestida Simon. “One that he could use to get riches.” Since surviving an attack led by her father, Salvatory has spent the past four years living in the Kabanga Protectorate Center, a government safe house for people living with albinism. Malawi: ‘Witch doctor’ cons man of N$35 000

Witchcraft that was supposed to make a man rich ended in tears with the “patient” losing more then N$35 000 after  he consulted a witch doctor, who identified himself as Dr Camuchau from Malawi, to increase his financial fortune. Read more here
