Nigeria: Five Arrested Over Suspected Ritual Murder of 11-Yr-Old Girl

18th November: Five suspects have been arrested by the Police in Plateau State in connection with the ritual killing of an 11-year-old girl, whose eyes and tongue had been removed when her corpse was found. Read more here.

Uganda: Eight Arrested in Suspected Ritual Murde

18th November:

Police in Nakasongola District have arrested eight people to help with investigations in a suspected human sacrifice case at Kiryabyoya Trading Centre in Nakitoma Subcounty. The victim’s body was found dumped in his salon at Kiryabyoya Trading Centre on Tuesday with missing body parts, including the tongue. Read more here.

Ghana: United Nations Witch Hunts in Ghana

21st November: The United Nations should use the visit to Ghana of the Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, Ms Gulnara Shahinian to shine international light on the menace of witch hunting in the country and in other parts of sub Saharan Africa. Ms Gulnara Shahinian is scheduled to visit Ghana from 22 to 29 November 2013.

The aim of her visit is to ‘assess the situation on the ground with regard to slavery-like practices’ in the country. According to a press release from her office,  Ms Shahinian will, during her stay in Ghana, “explore strategies to address the current challenges in ending such practices, including the use of the worst forms of child-labour in a number of economic sectors, and other forms of contemporary slavery that are often less visible such as domestic servitude, and those emerging from harmful traditional practices.”
Unfortunately, there was no mention of the harmful traditional practice of witch hunting in Ghana and the plight of accused persons, women, children and others  internally displaced due to witchcraft accusation in this west African nation. Haiti: Haiti uses Voodoo and Western Psychotherapy to Recover

8th February, 2011: With many people still living in tents, it’s easy to see how slowly Haiti is recovering from the 2010 earthquake. But less visible is the emotional toll. With only two psychiatric hospitals in Haiti, many Haitians don’t choose modern psychiatric care. Instead, they rely on Voodoo to cure what they consider to be a curse or possession by spirits. India: Sullia Mystery Deepens as Youth Goes Missing

22nd November: Suspicions of human sacrifice in the name of seeking hidden treasure in the forests continue to grow. Following the mysterious death of one-and-a-half-year-old Sharika, a youth, who is said to be a relative and neighbour of Sharika’s parents has also gone missing. The said youth is a part of a group that hunting for the hidden treasure. Read more here.

South Africa: Muti Fears in Child Killings

22nd November: The bodies of two children, a nine-year-old boy and a three-year-old boy, believed to have been killed for muti have been dug up by police in a half-built rondavel. Police also found a knife and a traditional bowl (called ukhamba) containing traditional medicine as well as blood in the rondavel. Read more here.

Kenya: Couple Lynched Over Witchcraft

22nd November: A couple has been lynched on suspicion of witchcraftcy in Miritini, Changamwe district.The couple was attacked by villagers who hacked them to death before burning their bodies on Wednesday. Police said residents accused the duo of bewitching a local. Read more here.

India: Ten-Year-Old’s Severed Body Found, Human Sacrifice Suspected

2nd Jan, 2014: A 10-year-old boy, who was allegedly abducted, was found dead with his body parts chopped, in Ratanpur, a religious town of Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district. While villagers strongly suspect it to be a case of human sacrifice, police believe that it is a case of some wild animal attacking the boy.
