Nepal: ‘witchcraft’ attack condemned

Nepal’s women’s commission has condemned an attack in the remote west of the country on an elderly woman accused of witchcraft. The 60-year-old woman was stripped naked and had her head shaved. She was fed excrement and badly beaten. To read more click here

Britain: Horror at the hands of healers

DESPERATE Asian families are visiting unqualified ‘spiritual healers’ to try and cure their child’s disability. Families are splashing out hundreds of pounds on these healers in the hope their child’s autism or learning disability can be cured, campaigners have told Eastern Eye. Some healers in Britain carry out spells using black magic and may beat the child to rid it of ‘evil spirits’ – an experience which can leave the child traumatised. Malawi: ‘Witch doctor’ cons man of N$35 000

Witchcraft that was supposed to make a man rich ended in tears with the “patient” losing more then N$35 000 after  he consulted a witch doctor, who identified himself as Dr Camuchau from Malawi, to increase his financial fortune. Read more here

South Africa: ‘There is witchcraft here’

The office of King Mabhoko III of the Ndebele tribe has blamed the deaths of 28 initiates in Mpumalanga’s highveld area on witchcraft. Ndzundza Tribal Authority (NTA) spokesperson Prince Dumisani Mahlangu told a Sapacorrespondent this week the number of deaths was unusually high. Read more here

PNG repeals sorcery law and expands death penalty

Papua New Guinea has repealed its controversial Sorcery Act but has expanded its use of the death penalty. Under legislation passed in parliament on Tuesday, killings linked to allegations of witchcraft will now be treated as murder. Read more here
