Mental health stigma in Muslim communities may be partly due to a commonly held belief among some Muslims about the supernatural causes of mental illness(i.e. jinn-possession brought on by one’s sinful life). A thematic analysis was carried out on four English translations and the Arabic text of the Qur’an to explore whether the connection between jinn-possession and insanity exists within the Muslim holy book. No connection between spirit-possession and madness or mental illness was found. Pagans taunted and labelled people as jinn-possessed only to ostracize and scapegoat. Linking the labeling of people as jinn-possession to a pagan practice may be used to educate Muslims,so they can reassess their community’s stigma towards the mentally ill. Read more here
Butaleja police have recovered the torso of a 10-year-old unidentified boy believed to have been a victim of a ritual murder. The torso was found lying on Tuesday morning in a pool of blood at Dumanghale Rock near Mpologoma swamp in Budumba Sub County. Vincent Otyeng, the Officer in charge Criminal Investigations Butaleja Central Police Station says the torso was discovered by some residents on their way to the garden, who immediately notified police. Abuse and neglect of senior citizens is a growing concern of all societies. Proper understanding of the magnitude and characteristics of Elder Abuse is necessary for developing policies and programs to curb this social evil. This study, by the National Human Rights Commision Nepal and the Geriatric Centre Nepal, is based on cases of elder abuse reported in the two prominent national dailies, Kantipur and Anapurna Post, in a period of July 2008 to July 2010. Such data base limits study of cases that could not draw media attention, such as emotional and psychological abuse. Blaming an old woman for witchcraft was the second most common cause for physical abuse. To read more click here

It can even occur before a girl is born through sexselective abortion and menace women throughout their old age. Some types of VAW such as sexual violence and domestic violence, occur in all cultures, although they are more common in some than others. Girls and women in Nepal are exposed to a variety of forms of violence, many of which are suffered by women globally, and others that are seen more commonly in Nepal than elsewhere. Dhegani Mahato, a 40-year-old mother of two, was burned alive in Nepal after being declared a witch. The attack occurred Friday in Bagauda, 50 miles south of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. According to police, Mahato was attacked by family members and other residents after a shaman accused her of casting a spell to make a relative sick. To read more click here
