Nigerian police rescued 16 people from an underground dungeon believed to be a ritual killing site, the local newspaper Leadership reported Sunday.
The officers also discovered several decomposing bodies and body parts, hundreds of human skulls, old clothes, photographs and voter cards in the chamber located in a forest near Soka in the western state of Oyo.
Police found pools of blood in a nearby building where the captives were allegedly slaughtered and from where their body parts were sold for medicinal purposes, according to Oyo state police spokeswoman Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor.

At least 13 people were arrested Saturday for their alleged involvement in the murder of three members of a family in Assam on suspicion of practicing witchcraft, police said.
The victims were identified as Rajendra Brahma (65), his wife Bangali Brahma (60) and their 35-year-old daughter Malati Brahma, police said.
“Some villagers suspected the family of practicing witchcraft and killed them on the night of March 19,” said Inspector General of Police.

An elderly man was killed and his private parts chopped off at Ziwa La Furunzi area within Malindi district in Kilifi County on Thursday.
The elderly man is said to have been killed by unknown people on suspicion that he had bewitched his own son who has since died. His head and private parts were severed and deposited beside his body. According to a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of arrest, the man was killed following the mysterious demise of one of his sons.

The family of a 62-year-old woman who was shot to death at her home in Barangay Maananteng, Solsona, Ilocos Norte still cannot understand why the lady was killed. The family of Juliana Ancheta said their matriarch does not have any known enemies.
A rumor have been circulating however that she is a witch (“mangkukulam”). Ancheta’s daughter, Leilanie, could not help but react to such a rumor. She called on those who have been spreading the rumor to respect her family.

International human rights groups, 21st Century Witchcraft Accusations and Persecution and Human Rights Information Network (WHRIN) are putting pressure on the United Nation to stop the alleged de-humanisation of persons suspected to be witches and wizards in Nigeria and Africa.
The groups said unless the UN take urgent steps to check the abuses of those suspected to have magical powers to kill easily, the mob action on them would continue as members of the public are ready to lynch them at the slightest suspicion.
