Papua New Guinea: Six killed in PNG sorcery attack

Police in Papua New Guinea have detained 180 people after a witch hunt that left six people dead, including two children.

Several hundred men from Raicoast village in Madang province descended on Sasiko village, looking for people they believed to be sorcerers. Local media reports say the violent rampage went on for most of Monday.

Witnesses say one man killed was an innocent bystander on his way to work, while two children under the age of five were also reportedly killed.

Fiji: Six Questioned over Nadi man’s death

A 49 year old man accused of practicing witchcraft died at the Lautoka hospital last night after being allegedly assaulted by six men in Nadi.

The six men are being questioned over their involvement in the said attack.

Zimbabwe: Woman attacks mother-in-law with an axe over ‘witchcraft’

In an incident that left the court gallery shell shocked, an elderly Eskbank farm woman ran amok after attacking her mother- in- law with an axe after accusing her of witchcraft, a court heard on Monday.

The accused, Berita Soveti (55) of Eskbank farm in Harare, stood bewildered in the dock while appearing before Magistrate Tendai Mahwe at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts. She faces attempted murder charges.

Nigeria: Police dismiss 2 officers for ritual murder

Two of the four police officers arrested for alleged ritual murder of a 26-year-old man in Aba, Mr. Onyekachi Chukwu, have been dismissed by the police authorities.

Chukwu was allegedly murdered by the policemen attached to the Federal Highway patrol unit of the Nigeria Police, Aba section on the pretext that he was an armed robber. His mutilated body was later found in a dump site at Akpa Village in Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.

More than 20 skulls and decomposing bodies were also found at the dump.

Namibia: Onayena ritual killings remain rumours

Allegations of witchcraft and satanic ritual killings in villages in the Onayena Constituency in the Oshikoto Region could not be substantiated, where residents took it upon themselves to explain the alleged death of nine people in the last ten years or so.
The allegations are fuelled by rumours that a taxi driver (name known) had been chasing people, killing them and throwing their bodies in the water.
In the letter dated 4 April 2014, the residents demand the removal of certain police officers from Onayena Police Station, claiming they conspire with the satanic cult who reportedly execute poisonings and sacrificial killings at Onamulyo location.

Nigeria: Mutilated Body Of 11-Year-Old Boy Found In Polythene Bag

A corpse of an 11-year-old boy, Master Umar Saleh was found semi-concealed in a polythene bag in Rumde Baru ward in Yola North local government area of Adamawa State.

The mutilated body was discovered by a passerby who quickly raised an alarm. His eyes, tongue, nose, ears and genitals were severed. According to the father of the victim, Mallam Sale Usman, the family had been looking for the victim for five days following his failure to return home.

Gambia: 1,000 ‘witches’ arrested and drugged by ‘witch doctors’ in Gambia

Amnesty International called on the government of President Yahya Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup and has claimed he can cure Aids, to halt the campaign and bring those responsible to justice.
Police officers, soldiers and some of the president’s personal security guards accompanied the “witch doctors” in the series of round-ups, witnesses said. In the most recent incident, which took place on March 9, paramilitary police armed with guns and shovels surrounded the village of Sintet before dawn.

Nepal: Victims of witchcraft accusations still not rehabilitated

In the 21st century, when women of most countries of the world are climbing the ladders of development, women in Nepal have not been able to move ahead by shunning malpractices like witchcraft.

Many have lost their lives and some have been compelled to be displaced and some are living a wretched life physically and mentally. Raj Kumari Rana Tharu, 60, was tortured by her daughter by relation on the charge of aborting her pregnancy through witchcraft.

Tanzania: Fresh witchcraft killings in Mara

Witchcraft beliefs are associated with the spate of women killings which has been reported in Butiama District, Mara Region for the past four months, The Citizen on Sunday has been informed.

Interviews conducted by this paper have established that small gold miners are said to be behind the spate of killings.

Many people have pointed an accusing finger at the government over failure to contain the killings, despite volunteering information which would have helped the law enforcers to nab people suspected to be behind them.
