Ghana: Ghanaians ban ritual killing of disabled ‘spirit children’

Local leaders in northern Ghana have announced the abolition of the ritual killing of babies born with physical disabilities, who were believed to have been possessed by evil spirits. Chiefs in the Upper East Region held a special ceremony to announce the banning of the practice, in which “spirit children” were given a poisonous drink to kill them. See here.

Malawi: Malawi anti-witchcraft violence project launched

Malawi’s Association for Secular Humanism [ASH] has embarked on a project aimed at ending witchcraft-based violence against the elderly, women and children in the country. The project, which will cover 11 districts, is aimed at protecting the rights of victims of witchcraft-related violence being funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Read more here.

Malawi: Court in Malawi saves alleged witch from village eviction

The high court in in Mzuzu has restrained Village Headman Green Mwafongo and his Wanyambala from evicting or chasing Winston Sikamba from his home village Donald village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga district following allegations that he was killing people in the area through witchcraft.
